Women leaving prison receive support via PIR Flexible Funding

Wed, 06/04/2016

Hobart Womens Health Centre have a worker who visits the women’s prison to provide some pre-release skill training groups. She learned that women who have sentences of less than 6 months are not eligible for pre or post release support. Many women in prison suffer various forms and degrees of mental ill health. With support from PIR HWHC designed a program to involve a range of service providers in providing support to these women, and in developing resources that would assist in this process.

In the past, the prison has said that it does not have sufficient resources to support these women. Since the HWHC project received funding, the prison has reviewed and changed its practice in relation to providing support, and is now a participant, with a group of NGO’s in a project to improve outcomes for them. This group is likely to continue to advocate for better responses to the needs of these women after the modest HWHS project is complete.
